Whether they called it a stutter or stammer, the truth was I was stuck. Stuck in silence. Trying to form the words that got trapped somewhere between my mind and my mouth. Hey, are you the kid with the stutter? I couldn’t answer. I tried to, but when the reaction is laughter you learn to prefer the dark silence. On the bookshelf was a book, Roget’s Thesaurus. A paper chain on the cover. Words linked to other words. I held an escape map in my hands. I pored through that book looking for alternative routes out of the silence. Word substitution. Hey, are you the kid with the stutter? Y-absolutely. Certainly. Truly.

Jer Hayes is from Dublin, Ireland. He is a new (old) writer.
