Artist Statement

“I wanted to process my experience contracting sexually transmitted diseases into a short, animated film. Through the depictions of microscopic forms, I aimed to represent cells being attacked by a foreign entity. The dichotomy between the desire for close intimacy left me with the unintended consequences of contracting Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Lack of comprehensive sex education led me to poor decision-making, however, it’s important to note these diseases are a part of human life. As I learned more about what I had contracted, I soon discovered that modern medicine only has so many tools in the toolbox left to fight these viruses, due to an ongoing misuse and over-prescription of antibiotics. I was left with feelings of dread while coming to terms with the fact that in a distant future we may not be able to have the tools to help treat others. Suddenly, my attitude towards sex changed; I became more conscious about practicing safer methods. Grappling with this process, I was inspired by this experience to represent some form of infection on the body, creating an otherworldly realm. Using the power of 3D programs like Maya and Houdini, I learned how to make particles that best represent a transformation of a cell-like world. Bacteria-like particles latch onto and sink an organism, ultimately transforming it into a new, glitchy-discolored being.”
