memory pop

By: Cristina Sanchez

Artist Statement: This piece depicts a scene of the vibrant El Caminito, Buenos Aires, from when I visited several years ago. My maternal grandfather was born in Buenos Aires in the 1930s, and moved to Galicia, Spain with his mother (a Galician) when he was an infant. He did not know much about his father, so I had searched for information on him at el Museum de la Inmigración. I was able to find a certificate of arrival from when my great grandfather immigrated from Galicia to Buenos Aires. I find that art can be a way to memorialize our personal and family histories, as integral components of our individual identity.
